New Wildfire Planning Resources from California

New Wildfire Planning Resources from California

Sep 14, 2022

California Governor’s Office of Planning and Research (OPR) published two new wildfire planning resources to support local agencies as they plan for wildfire at the community scale. Although the primary audiences for these resources are planners and other professionals in California, anyone interested in land use planning strategies for wildfire can benefit from reading these materials.

OPR’s updated Fire Hazard Planning Technical Advisory helps cities and counties address and reduce wildfire risk in their general plans. This Technical Advisory includes information to ensure communities meet legislative requirements, example policies to include in general plan updates, and guidance on outreach and engagement relative to fire hazard planning.

OPR’s new Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) Planning Guide complements the Technical Advisory by providing community examples and best practice case studies. Case studies showcase a number of different planning tools—including master plans, recovery ordinances, landscape ordinances, overlay zones, development codes, and assessment districts—and how these tools can be leveraged to address wildfire risk.

The WUI Planning Guide was developed by the Community Wildfire Planning Center (CWPC) in partnership with OPR and CAL FIRE, with funding provided by California Climate Investments.
